Ewa Obrochta

Born in 1977 in Krakow, Ewa Obrochta studied painting and drawing under Prof. Stanisław Rodziński at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, graduating with merit in 2005. Even before her graduation, Obrochta received a scholarship from the National Fund in Warsaw (1996) and in 2002 was among the winners of the Polish Young Art Festival in New York. Since her graduation, Obrochta has taken part in various artists’ workshops in Poland, Slovakia, Spain, France and Italy and has produced several gallery installations as well as taken part in performance art in collaboration with other artists. Her interests include painting, collage, free-standing structures and video shorts; with the sources of inspiration lying in the cinema, the world of sound, improvisation and everyday life which lies in wait to take us by surprise when we least expect it. Obrochta is a fully paid-up Londoner, having only lived in the capital since 2007, but already with five different London addresses under her belt.

Urodziła się w 1977 w Krakowie. Jest absolwentką wydzialu malarstwa oraz aneksu rysunkowego Akademii Sztuk Pieknych w Krakowie. Dyplom w pracowni prof. Stanisława Rodzińskiego obroniła z wyróżnieniem w 2005 roku. Uczestniczyła w wielu ogólnopolskich i międzynarodowych plenerach. m.in. w Słowacji, Hiszpanii, we Francjii i Włoszech.  Stypendystka Krajowego Funduszu w Warszawie (1996) i laureatka Polskiego Festiwalu Sztuki Młodych w Nowym Jorku (2002). Zrealizowała kilka projektów przestrzeni wystawowych. Maluje obrazy, tworzy kolaże, wolno stojące obiekty, współpracuje z różnymi artystami tworząc performance, jest autorką krótkich filmów wideo. Inspiruje się dźwiękiem, kinem, niespodziankami, jakie czyhaja na nią codzienie. Od 2007 roku mieszka w Londynie, przeprowadzała się już pięć razy.

My modest contribution to ARTeria consists of a collection of paintings in acrylic on canvas and a short film: ‘The Sound of a Bramble.’ They have been inspired by the photographs and the video sketch-book started by me during my stay in Guernsey and continued in London. I concern myself mainly with the interrelationship of our public persona vis-à-vis our private face in the context of the possibilities offered by social intercourse. I am not afraid of chaos in the world that surrounds us. I don’t run away from reality towards abstraction; to the contrary, I like to reaffirm everyday life with as much of a sense of humour as possible. My exhibit at ARTeria is a ‘becoming’ object; full of motion and flux. A city, a scrap of a map, an accelerating civilisation; they all run to the tempo dictated by the drum we are beating ourselves. My sense of rhythm is my constant companion; it amplifies the sound I’m making.

Andrzej Maria Borkowski

Born in Warsaw, Andrzej Borkowski has been living in London since 1980. Borkowski studied history of art at Warsaw University and at The Courtauld Institute of Art, finishing with an M.A. in 1988; he also studied art printing techniques at the London School of Printing. Borkowski frequently exhibited with ‘Bigos – Artists of Polish Origin,’ a London based group, of which he was a founding member, and since 1990 has shown his prints and drawings at individual shows, as well as with ‘Polar Press,’ of which he is also a member. Since 1994, Borkowski has been working as lecturer in visual practices at the University of Brighton. His works have been acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum and by various European and American collections. Borkowski is a member of AICA – Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art.

Urodził się w Warszawie. W latach 80. przyjechał do Londynu, gdzie meiszka do chwili obecnej. Studiował historię sztuki na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim oraz w Courtauld Institute (University of London) uzyskując tytuł magistra. Studiował także techniki grafiki artystycznej w London School of Printing. Był członkiem-założycielem grupy polskich artystów Bigos. Od 1990 wystawia swoje grafiki i rysunki w wielu galeriach Wielkiej Brytanii i zagranicą, indywidualnie a także jako członek grupy Polar Press. Od 1994 pracuje jako wykładowca na Uniwersytecie w Brighton. Jego prace znajdują się w Victoria & Albert  oraz w wielu kolekcjach prywatnych w Europie i Ameryce. Jako krytyk sztuki  jest członkiem Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art.

My drawings and prints flirt with the viewer, inviting him to exercise his imagination. I try to create fields of meanings and associations; sometimes gently erotic in nature, sometimes slightly scary, but hopefully always seductive and exciting. This summer my inspiration has come from fallen hibiscus flowers and from strange patterns on pebbles.

Sławek Blatton

Sławek Blatton graduated with honours from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, having studied painting and graphics. He arrived in London in 1970 as the winner of the Polish Ministry of Culture and Art scholarship. Blatton worked as fine art restorer at the National Gallery in London (1981 -1994) and as lecturer at the Working Men’s College, London (1975 -2004). In the seventies, Blatton was a member of the National Society of Painters and is a current member of The London Group and of the Association of Polish Artists in Great Britain. He has shown at numerous galleries in London and in Poland.

Studiował w warszawskiej Akademii Sztuk Pięknych, gdzie uzyskał dyplom z nagrodą rektorską na wydziale malarstwa i grafiki. W 1970 roku dostał stypendium Ministerstwa Kultury i Sztuki i w tym samym czasie wyjechał do Londynu. W latach 1981-1994 pracował jako konserwator dzieł sztuki w National Gallery, a od 1975 do 2004 wykładał na Working Men’s College w Londynie. Do roku 1980 był członkiem National Society of Painters and Sculptors, a do chwili obecnej The London Group oraz Związku Polskich Artystów w Wielkiej Brytanii (APA). Wystawiał w licznych galeriach londyńskich oraz w Polsce.

It seems strange that a painter as major as Bacon has had so little stylistic influence on other artists. He remains a glittering cul-de-sac. Nevertheless, my watercolour nudes, landscapes and other pictures owe something to this master. Posterity will judge Bacon’s place in the 20th century art and his long term influence. Painting is what lasts, and Bacon was the supreme master of the medium.

Marcin Dudek

Born 1979 in Krakow, Marcin Dudek studied graphic art and painting at the University of Salzburg, followed by two years of study at Central Saint Martins School of Art, where he graduated in 2007 with an MA in fine art. Dudek’s interests include painting, graphic design, video art, installations and interventions.

W 2005 roku przyjechał do Londynu, gdzie w 2007 roku uzyskał dyplom MA in Fine Art w Central Saint Martin’s College of Art. Malarz, grafik, autor projektów przestrzennych, wideo i interwencji. Obecnie ukończył projekt Pumping Station przy współpracy z Matts Gallery London, który został realizowany w 23 europejskich miastach.

My paintings are mainly inspired by the Constructivist and Minimalist movements and can best be described as hybrids of architecture and anonymous ephemera. They hint at the evolutionary processes by means of illusory changeability. The installations aim at the apparent transformation of the environment they find themselves in; be it a gallery or private living quarters. Their tunnel-like constructions are reminiscent of the underground corridors running under the US-Mexico border and at the famous Sarajevo Tunnel dug out during the recent Balkan War. My videos, which play an important role within my body of work, depict selections of mundane objects and architecture oscillating between the make-believe cinematographic reality and the actual surroundings they are anchored in. ‘Pumping Station’ (in collaboration with Matts Gallery in London) offers an example of my intervention/performance art and has been recently performed at rail stations in twenty three European cities.

Paweł Wąsek

Born in 1973 in Zgierz near Lodz, Paweł Wąsek studied fabric and fashion design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz, graduating with merit in 2000 in fashion design (under Prof. Andrzej Nawrot) and drawing/painting (under Prof. Wiesław Garboliński). Wąsek’s body of work includes paintings, drawings and installations composed out of the detritus of everyday life, many of which have been acquired by private collectors in Poland, USA, Italy, France and other countries. Resident in London since 2001.

Urodził się w 1973 roku w Zgierzu. Absolwent Wydziału Tkaniny i Ubioru Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Łodzi. Dyplom w Pracowni Projektowania Ubioru prof. Andrzeja Nawrota oraz w Pracowni Rysunku i Malarstwa prof. Wiesława Garbolińskiego obronił z wyróżnieniem w 2000 roku. Tworzy rysunki, obrazy oraz instalacje skomponowane z przypadkowych przedmiotów, którym nadaje nowe znaczenie. When I’m not painting, I observe people as well as buildings and interactions of light and colour in environments. Like a magpie, I amass odd bits and pieces and play at arranging them into compositions and mosaics; shine light at them and observe the resulting configurations at my leisure. These moments of contemplation usually result in a series of rapidly realised images in oils, pencil or pastels. At ARTeria I’ll be showing my latest work, carved out of cannibalised figurative clichés. Some of these images are in the manner of flying mini city-factories, while others have evolved into curious landscapes of imaginary groves springing straight out of water sources and therefore blooming, fruiting and even dancing all at once.

Joanna Szwej-Hawkin

Born in 1966 in Starachowice, Poland, Joanna Szwej-Hawkin  completed a degree in Pedagogic at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, Lublin. Shortly afterwards she moved to London. A few years ago she took her first short course in pottery and ceramics at Camberwell College of Arts. Her hobby became a passion and she continued her education at Morley College and Southwark College. She now works at the pottery and ceramics studio of Roland Austin. One of her favourite techniques is raku.

Urodziła się w 1966 roku w Starachowicach. Absolwentka pedagogiki Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie. W 1991 roku przyjechała do Londynu. Od kilku lat zajmuje się garncarstwem i ceramiką. Pierwsze kroki stawiała na kursach w Camberwell College of Arts, kolejne w Morley College i Southwark College. Pracuje teraz w prywatnej pracowni ceramiki artystycznej i użytkowej pod kierunkiem Rolanda Austina. Do tworzenia ceramiki artystycznej najczęściej wykorzystuje technikę wypalania raku, a do ceramiki użytkowej – technikę wypalania kamionki.

I’m constantly fascinated by the potential of a lump of clay to be transformed into a thing of beauty. Clay emerges out of the Mother Earth after millions and millions of years. It may be grey, white, black or red; but whatever its hue, it is invariably sticky, pliable and cool to the touch. The potter takes this raw material, works it, bakes it in a kiln and finally adorns it with a glaze to be baked for the second time. The long wait for the finished art form is always filled with excitement. Almost anything can be fashioned out of clay – even the receptacle we use each day for our morning coffee…

Danuta Sołowiej

Born in 1962 in Bialystok, Poland. In 1987 Danuta Sołowiej obtained an MA in sculpture having specialised in medallic art under Professor Zofia Demkowska at the Academy of Fine Arts, Warsaw. Moving to London she completed a contemporary medals course at the Royal College of Art where she is now a visiting lecturer on medallic art. In 1997/98 her exhibition “Traces of Feelings” toured Poland.  In 2001 she showed her work amongst the sculpture collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in the solo exhibition “Recall”. She has won numerous medal and coin design competitions. Recent include The Royal Mintfive pound crown commemorating QEII 80th birthday. Her work can be found in many national and private collections including Poland, Finland and Great Britaiin. She is actively involved in improving and protecting Southwark open spaces.

Urodziła się w 1962 roku w Białymstoku. W 1987 uzyskała dyplom na wydziale rzeźby warszawskiej Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w klasie medalierstwa prof. Zofii Demkowskiej. W Londynie studiowała w Royal College of Art, gdzie jest teraz wykładowcą sztuki medalierstwa. W latach 1997-98 jej wystawa „Ślady uczuć” była pokazywana w wielu galeriach w Polsce. W 2001 jej prace prezentowane były w Victoria and Albert Museum w ramach  indywidualnej wystawy „Recall”. Zdobyła wiele nagród i wyróżnień na konkursach medalierstkich (m.in. The Royal Mint) za monetę pięciofuntową upamiętniającą 80. urodziny królowej Elżbiety II). Jej prace znajdują się w wielu państwowych i prywatnych zbiorach brytyjskich, polskich, a także w Holandii i Finlandii. Jest zaangażowana w pracę społeczną, zajmująć się m.in. zagospodarowaniem i ochroną przestrzeni rekreacyjnych w Southwark.

“Can You Hear Me?” is a continuation of the series “Witnesses” in a different situation, in the new setting.  I am still fascinated by multiples of the human face outlined with traces of feelings, attributes and character.  Still strong are my childhood memories of icons and holy cards from the border region where Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox cultures meet. I would like to dedicate this body of work to my home town of Bialystok.

Tomasz Stando

Born in Warsaw in 1953, Tomasz Stando studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under Prof. Jan Tarasin (painting) and under Prof. Halina Chorowska (graphics); he is also a past grantee of the Pollock-Krassner Foundation, New York. Since 1984, Stando’s work has been shown at numerous solo and collective exhibitions in his native Poland as well as in the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Holland and Britain: the latest being ‘Micro-Macro Vision,’ a group show at Red Gate Gallery London in March 2009. His works are to be found in many public collections, as well as in the collections of the National Museum in Warsaw and the Pollock-Krassner Foundation in New York. Agnieszka Stando

Born in 1967 in Poland. She studied graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, finishing with an MA degree in 1992. Stando’s academic years were followed by a decade (1997-2007) working as the art director at Czytelnik, one of the most respected Polish publishing houses, during which time she created over 200 book covers. Apart from book cover design, Stando practises illustration, applied graphics and painting, and has exhibited at many group shows in Poland and abroad. Her work can be found in private collections in Poland, Denmark, France, Holland, Japan and Italy, as well as in the collection of the National Library in Warsaw. Stando has been living and working in London for the past three years.

I have been interested in the art of collage for a long time. My heroes of the genre include Roman Cieslewicz, Alexander Rodczenko and other exponents of Constructivism. I tend to use mixed media in my work, never straying too far from the collage. I see the world in terms of contrasting elements, such as: pretty-ugly, easy-difficult, ordinary-extraordinary, realistic-hyperrealistic. All these memes, when combined, deliver messages of their own. I also love lettering in all its forms: as calligraphy, print, or as a gesture towards drawing.

Olga Sienko

Born in Warsaw, Olga Sienko started her artistic career at The Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, graduating with an M.A. in Fine Art in 1980. She subsequently studied at the Slade School of Fine Art as a British Council scholar and continued her studies at the Central School of Art and Design, where she was awarded a diploma in advanced printmaking. Sienko completed her printmaking education at the Royal College of Art, where she was awarded an M.A in 1990. During her student years, Sienko won prizes at art competitions and festivals. In 1993, Sienko established Studio Sienko Gallery (57A Lant St, London SE1) where she has curated over seventy exhibitions till now. During this time she has also written and photographed for the Arteon, a Polish art magazine and organised a number of artists’ workshops in Poland, Italy and France. Sienko has shown her work at more than fifty solo and group exhibitions all over the world and it has been purchased by private and public collections in many countries, including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Library in Warsaw.

I am interested in the meaning of movement, of expressive gestures and of mime. I endeavour to capture meaningful moments of eternity in a variety of techniques.
